Matthew Boyd is an award-winning cinematographer based in San Francisco and Los Angeles, he is credited with over 30 short films and 12 features. Boyd earned his BFA in Film & Television Production from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Early in his career he teamed up with writer-director Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed, Jurassic World) on several projects including Black Dragon w/ Xin Wuku, Jake Johnson. His music video work includes Nicky Romero/Thierry Guetta, Michael Franti & Spearhead, and Marilyn Manson. In 2010 he teamed up with EP Sara Elizabeth Timmins and dir. Michael McKay on Lake Effects, Jane Seymour, Sean Patrick Flanery, Ben Savage, Casper Van Dien, Madeline Zima. In 2014 he worked again with Sara Elizabeth Timmins as 2nd Unit DP on David Baldacci’s Wish You Well, Ellen Burstyn, Josh Lucas, dir. Darnell Martin.
Boyd’s recent work includes the dramatic thriller Mine 9 dir. Edward Mensore (Netflix) starring Terry Serpico and Mark Ashworth; Spaceman, dir. Brett Rapkin (Orion Pictures) starring Sterling K. Brown, Josh Duhamel, Ernie Hudson; In-Lawfully Yours starring Corbin Bernsen, Chelsey Crisp, The Mentor dir. Moez Solis, and Beautiful Something, dir. Joseph Graham, starring Colman Domingo. Critically acclaimed films include The First Session, Strapped, Mine 9 and Pass the Salt, Please starring Seymour Cassel and Fionnula Flanagan and as a contributing cinematographer on HBO’s The Weight of Gold dir. Brett Rapkin.
In 2021 Boyd teamed with writer-director Aidan Stone on You’ll Lose a Good Thing starring Tai Takahashi, Emmy Newman, and Jimmy Fails (The Last Black Man in San Francisco) As of October, 2021 Boyd is in pre-production with writer-director Edward Mensore (Mine 9) on the opioid epidemic thriller, Hazard, set to film January 2022.
