Documentary – Die Diashow

Lucas Salm-Rojo  Seattle, WA / Documentary

This is a documentary directed by Nathaniel Banse about his 95 year old grandfather Karl. Over several afternoon Nathaniel and I spent time with Karl in his home documenting him and Nathaniels interactions with each other. Things like having lunch or looking at old photographs together became central to the story through this process and we were able to figure out what we really wanted to share with the viewer visually.

As well as this being a story somewhat about photography, figuring out how to incorporate other cameras withing the space became important. Showing the viewer an instance of Nathaniel using a camera for example became a way inadvertently draw attention to the fact that we as spectators are viewing into the story instead of just watching it haphazardly.

This project was shot on the Arri Amira with Fujinon Zoom Lenses.
