Johnson founded the Johnson Publishing Company in Chicago in 1942, later producing the influential Negro Digest (later Black World), Ebony, and Jet magazines, all dedicated to documenting and celebrating African American achievements and culture. The company’s headquarters became a landmark, being the first major downtown Chicago building designed by an African American architect and owned by an African American, symbolizing Johnson’s role in the city’s history.
