The “apple vowel” in Chinese-accented English

Matthew Chang  San Jose, CA / Explainer

Just a YouTube short I shot of myself explaining how the vowel in the English word “apple,” denoted by /æ/ and called the “near-open front unrounded vowel” in the International Phonetic Alphabet, tends to be difficult for Chinese language speakers like my mom to produce. I hope to make more explainers like this breaking down the subtle differences between accents and dialects.
