Do industry awards really matter?

The short answer is "it depends." The long answer, well, read below and let me know if you agree.

There are literally TONS of industry awards out there. From the famous, well-known ones like the EGOTs, Telly’s Clios, EFFIEs and others, to many niche awards that are far from famous to those outside that specific industry.

So, do these niche industry awards mean anything then?

Depends on who you talk to.

Ultimately, most “awards” boil down to marketing.

An Oscar win doesn’t guarantee more box office revenues. “While a “Best Picture” win can boost a film’s revenue by roughly 22% and provide a significant marketing boost, many winners are lower-grossing art-house films rather than blockbusters. The award often brings a smaller box-office bump than in the past, with major financial success usually driven by franchises rather than accolades. [1, 2, 3, 4]”

But let’s face it, if you won an industry award, you’d be thrilled! Why not? It’s usually a sweet thing to add to your LinkedIn profile and all your social media bios.

It definitely helps add credibility (for what it’s worth), adding “Award Nominated….” to your marketing mix.

Which brings me to the “why” I share all of this.

Last week, I received an email saying that my Corporate Narration demo was selected as a nominee in the category “Demo Reels – Best Performance – Non-Broadcast Narration.”

For those who know me and my sense of humour, this will make sense…my first thought was “geeze, they’re nominating anyone these days!”

Then, after a moment of sanity – and after reading a Facebook post of a colleague whose thoughts and opinions matter to me – I realized I should feel very grateful for even being nominated.

Yes, creative awards are rife with subjectivity and possible favouritism, but it’s still an honour I don’t take lightly, as there were many who submitted for their own categories who never made the cut to the final nominee list.

Long rambling story short, I’m honoured and grateful for this nomination, and it wouldn’t be even possible without the generosity of J Michael Collins.

Enjoy your week, folks!
